Latest updates

529 lots will be up for sale during CGB’s Live Auction on 13 June 2017, from Ancient coinage to Royal and Modern French coins as well as World coins.

The sale starts with a wonderful collection of ancient coins – some sixty Greek coins, including two gold staters from Macedonia, one for King Philippe III (lot 431801) and one for King Cassander (lot 431931). These two coins come with a rare and superb Macedonian tetradrachm of the Chalkidic League (lot 432141).

Lot 431801

Philipus III - Gold stater

2 800 € / 4 500 €

The part dedicated to Roman coins is full of fine coins. As far as the period of the Republic is concerned, an extraordinary Julius Caesar denarius with a portrait (lot 431220) and several rare denarii from the Robert Couet collection should draw your attention.

Lot 431220

Julius Cesar - Denier

3000 / 6000

You will surely notice three interesting aurei for the Empire, starting with a Plotinus coin in very good condition with Vesta on its reverse. (lot 430813). An exceptional-quality Lucius Verus coin (lot 432290) is also offered for sale, along with a Domitianus as Caesar aureus (lot 431840). The sale continues with rare Low-Empire coins,  a Galerius medallion (lot 413478), a Valentinian I lightweight miliarense (lot 413486) and a Majorianus semi-siliqua (lot 413496). Some ten Gallic coins supplement this ancient coins portion, the climax of which will be a class VIIa Parisii stater (lot 411522).

Lot 430813

Plotina - Aureus

19 000 € / 30 000 €

Carolingian coins are also present – with about ten coins – among which a rare Charlemagne denarius for the Verdun workshop (lot 431842).

The royal coins portion of this sale highlights a set of particularly well-preserved coins from King Louis XIII to King Louis XVI. Among these are the King Louis XVI écu struck in Paris in 1791 (lot 424418) and the Louis coin struck in Nantes in 1786 (lot 424413). While the latter comes from the “Vendée” treasure trove (assumed to be that of Admiral Louis Charles du Chaffaut de Besné), both coins do stand out due to their exceptional condition. Since our catalog photographs do not reproduce their mint luster, you should come and look closely at them at our premises. Among this auction sale, some coins are of particular interest: the rarely-seen Louis XII half teston from Tours (lot 431490), the Louis XIII silver écu, 1st hallmark, struck in Paris in 1642 (lot 420956), the double King Louis XIV’s Louis d’or stuck in Lyon in 1710 (lot 430109), the Louis d’or constitutionnel or the Louis d’or conventionnel (lot 428028).

Lot 430109

Louis XIV - Gold Double Louis 1710 Lyon

A dozen feudal coins are also offered for sale. Among these are two fine coins with portraits - two testons - one for Savoy showing the effigy of King Charles I (lot 427342) and another one for the Duchy of Lorraine with a nice bust on the left hand-side of Antoine (lot 431864).

Then there are coins from the modern French coins period (after the French Revolution), i.e. more than 180 lots offered for sale, including more than 80 trial strikes and proof coins. From the Consulate to the French Fifth Republic, you will discover excellent-quality lots with some 15 coins from the Collection Idéale, such as the 2 Francs Napoléon III 1855 Paris (lot 428222) which is part of the Serge Morel collection, along with other coins with similar pedigree. You will also find coins from the Eric Beaujard collection, among which there is the extremely rare “2 centimes épi 1959” (lot 426807) or the fantastic 1 franc Napoléon III trial from 1866 (lot 429496). The 5-centimes Daniel-Dupuis trial on silver planchet is also part of this collection.

You will also find a very rare 8 escudos coin for King Philip IV of Spain from the Seville workshop (lot 431813). It has a stunning module and is furthermore dated 1644, which is rare for this type of coin.
