CGB Live Auction - March 14th

454 lots will be up for sale during CGB’s Live Auction on 14 March 2017, from Ancient coinage to Royal and Modern French coins as well as World coins.

The auction will begin with a fine assortment of Ancient coins. An interesting selection of over fifty Greek coins will introduce the catalogue, in particular with a very beautiful tetradrachm serie.

Among the selection of Roman coins, you will find several interesting aurei, like this rare Vespasian aureus, the second specimen ever known (Lot 420177). There will also be a splendid Domitian aureus with Germania on offer (Lot 422059), a Marcus Aurelius aureus in an amazingly good state of conservation, and one from Hadrianus (Lot 423508).

The part given over to Royal coins has a particularly rich selection of rare or quality coins. The climax of the sale is to be found in the part given over to Louis XV with an extremely rare gold medal with the type of the Écu “au bandeau”. It is the coin which is to be found on the cover of our catalogue (Lot 421270). As for the Louis XIII ten or eight louis coins, it is a gold medal minted in order to inaugurate a new monetary series. Such a numismatic item is exceptional and extremely rare.

Among the feudal coins, the selection holds lots of surprises in store with specimens that are very seldom to be seen on sale. First of all please note two medieval coins from Aquitaine which are extremely rare - a gold guyennois coin of Edouard III of England (Lot 421271). The coins from the Duchy of Lorraine are another interesting collection in the sale as regards feudal coins. Please note an impressive René II teston, the first coin with a portrait for Lorraine (Lot 421274).

Then there are coins from the Modern French period (post French Revolution) with more than a hundred lots on offer. From the Consulate to the Fifth Republic, you will discover lots of great quality with several specimens from the Ideal Collection, like the 20-franc 1812 Turin coin (Lot 416564)
