The Treasure of Nanteuil-lès-Meaux on our French Royal coins shop

Today, we are auctioning-off part of the treasure trove of Nanteuil-lès-Meaux, a town in the French district of Seine-et-Marne.

In 2013, while digging a trench to lay down power cables, its discoverers found a hoard of silver, billon and copper coins. This set was then entrusted to the regional archeology department (SRA) of the Île-de-France region in order to be reviewed.

When they were discovered, the coins were inside a ceramic container which was broken with the pickaxe which was used to dig the trench.

The burying of this coin hoard is most probably best understood in the context of the civil war which affected the towns of Mareuil, Quincy and Nanteuil-lès-Meaux, whose castle was razed to the ground in 1590.

The treasure is mainly made of royal coins, although a small number of feudal coins have also been identified.
